Frozen pavement: the leather winter shoe that holds on wet ice

The Spencer Mid is the men's leather winter shoe from Kamik, the Canadian maker based in Montréal since 1898. Its leather upper with a DriDefense membrane stops rain and slush while letting perspiration out, with the look of a high-cut town shoe. Its Vibram® Arctic Grip outsole is built for one precise thing: holding on wet ice, the kind on a pavement at the thaw and on car-park steps.

Inside, the HEAT-MX™ insulation and a moisture-wicking lining keep the foot warm; the padded collar closes the top with no hard edge. A 15 cm shaft stops just above the ankle, at shoe height, for the weight of a shoe.

Thermal protection

The HEAT-MX™ insulation holds the air warmed by the foot; the DriDefense membrane lets perspiration out while blocking water, which keeps the foot dry both ways. The shaft stops just above the ankle: in deep snow or for hours standing still on frozen ground, take a high boot with a removable liner — the Spencer Mid is a town shoe, its strength is grip.

Size guide

Men's fit, true to size. To measure: stand barefoot on a sheet of paper with your heel against the wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and read the length off the table. To choose: your usual size with a thin or medium sock, as the shoe is cut close to the foot; one size up only if you wear a thick wool sock. The insulation is fixed and does not pack down with use.

Care & Durability

Wipe salt and mud off with lukewarm water in the evening, before they mark the leather
Soft brush once dry, mild pH-neutral soap if needed
Air dry at room temperature; never against a radiator or stove, direct heat stiffens the leather
Rinse the outsole after a walk on salted pavement: salt clogs the lugs and cuts grip
No washing machine or tumble dryer
No waterproofing spray or chemical treatment: they clog the membrane and void the maker's one-year cover

Why the feet lose heat first:

Contact with the ground: on ice or a frozen pavement, heat drains downwards by conduction, continuously, for as long as you stand
Reduced circulation: in the cold the body protects the core first and cuts blood flow to the extremities — the feet cool down before anything else
Trapped moisture: a foot that sweats in a shoe that does not breathe cools through damp; the membrane lets out what leather alone would hold

Feet that stay cold often point to heat lost elsewhere — cover the head first. Under the shoe, the Heat Holders LITE socks complete the system. An outsole made for ice is only worth as much as it is clean: dried salt in the lugs is grip lost.
