Water-Free Lip Balm — Grand-Froid
Lips make none of the oil that would shield them. As soon as the air turns dry and the wind picks up, they lose water with nothing to hold it back, and chapping follows.
This stick lays down a film of waxes and rich oils that seals moisture in and shields the surface from the elements. The formula contains no water at all, so nothing in it can freeze against the skin.
Beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil feed the surface, while tocopherol keeps the blend from oxidising. Vanilla scent, 4.5 g stick, small enough for any pocket.
Quantity discount from 2 sticks — also available in packs of 2 and 5.
Offers no protection against the sun.
The skin on the lips is far thinner than the skin on the face, and it makes none of the oil that would shield it. Once the air dries out and the wind rises, the water it holds simply evaporates with nothing to stop it: the surface tightens, splits, then chaps. This stick lays down a film of waxes and plant-based oils that closes that escape route and keeps the mouth comfortable through the day.
Sold singly, with a quantity discount from 2 sticks; also available as a pack of 2 (one on you, one in reserve) and a pack of 5 for the family or the crew.
Packing for a trip north — Lapland, Iceland, Quebec in January — people think of the parka, the mittens, the socks. The balm gets bought on arrival, usually a day too late. Two things matter when picking one. A water-free formula first: a water-based balm hardens in an outer pocket and goes on badly. A stick rather than a pot second: gloved fingers scoop nothing out of a tub. This one answers both, and rides in an inside pocket where it stays soft.
Because the absence of water changes everything once the thermometer drops below zero.
