When snow melts on the glove, the hand cools: Karin shields it from water

Karin is the Huppa winter glove for hands facing snow, rain and wind at the same time. It is windproof, and its waterproof, breathable membrane, set between the outer fabric and the lining, stops water while letting the hand's perspiration escape instead of chilling it from the inside.

Its insulation holds the heat the hand produces. Breathability prevents the opposite effect: a hand that sweats with nowhere for the moisture to go cools down at the first pause.

From the ski slope to slush in town, from snow clearing to snowshoeing: one glove for women, in Sizes S to L.

Grand-Froid expert's view

A snowball fight: you pack the snow in both hands, it melts onto the glove, and a wet hand cools far faster than a dry one. For long spells in the cold, slip merino wool liner gloves underneath, and size up if in doubt: a glove that is too tight compresses the hand and cancels the insulation.

What is it designed for?

Karin is the choice for days when cold and damp arrive together.

  • Skiing and snowboarding: waiting at the lifts, getting up after a fall, tightening bindings
  • Slush in town: walking and waiting for the bus when snow turns to water
  • Snowshoeing and Nordic walks: steady effort where the hand sweats, so breathability matters
  • Snow clearing and winter chores: shovelling, de-icing the car, bringing in logs, with hands in prolonged contact with snow and meltwater
  • Long spells in the cold: merino wool liner gloves are worn underneath for a hand insulated in two layers

Thermal protection

Karin keeps the hand warm down to −20 °C / −4 °F. Below that, or during a long stop, add merino wool liner gloves: a still hand produces less heat than a working hand.

Size guide

How to choose: measure around your open hand, thumb excluded, across the knuckles, with a soft tape measure. If you plan to wear liner gloves underneath, measure with the liners on. Between two sizes, choose the larger one: a tight insulated glove compresses the hand and loses its insulation.

Why choose Karin gloves?

Karin combines waterproofing, breathability and insulation in a single glove: the hand stays dry outside and inside, and the heat stays in the glove.

Why hands cool first:

  • Vasoconstriction: in the cold, the body narrows the blood vessels in the extremities to protect the vital organs. Hands and feet therefore cool first, even when well equipped
  • Moisture: a wet hand loses heat faster than a dry one, which is why a waterproof glove matters in slush
  • Warning sign: hands that stay cold despite good gloves often signal heat loss elsewhere, the head first

* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn underneath.
