Comfort down to −50 °C / −58 °F*
ORIGINAL The warmest of the three Heat Holders ranges

For boots that let the cold rise through the sole

Socks cut for the boot : the leg rises over the calf and covers the band the boot leaves bare, where the cold gets in first.

The knit is thick and elastic : it traps a large volume of air around the foot, and it is that still air that insulates. It follows the calf without gripping it, which matters when you wear them eight hours at a stretch.

Grand-Froid expert's view

Wear them on their own, never over a thin sock : two layers compress the foot and squeeze out the air that keeps it warm. If the boot is already snug, take the size up. And complete the set with the women’s ORIGINAL hat.

What is it designed for?

A boot sock is judged on the hours it is worn without being taken off. Here are the situations this one is built for.

  • Wellies and lined boots: the leg rises above the boot shaft, where the calf is otherwise bare
  • Walking the dog in winter: an hour outside morning and evening, at a slow pace
  • Christmas markets and waiting outdoors: standing on cold cobbles, with the foot still
  • Nordic travel: Lapland, Iceland, Canada, where the cold holds all day
  • Winter gardening: in and out again, with the boots staying on
  • Complete the set: with the women’s ORIGINAL hat, the Willow gloves and the Marlow neck warmer

Size guide

Shoe sizes 37 to 42. The stretch knit follows the calf without gripping it.

⚠️ Important — the opposite effect if the foot is compressed. This is a thick sock. Inside an already snug boot it compresses the foot: circulation drops and the pocket of warm air disappears, producing exactly the opposite of the intended effect. Allow half a size to a full size up for your winter boots.

Between two sizes, take the larger one. The stretch knit adapts while keeping its insulating power.

Why choose these ORIGINAL long socks?

Because the foot is the first place warmth is lost, and the last place it comes back. These socks sit at the top of the Heat Holders range and are rated 7 times warmer than a cotton sock. Pair them with a hat, gloves and a neck warmer: the extremities are where a cold day is won or lost.

The three Heat Holders ranges:

  • ULTRA LITE — the thinnest, TOG 1.0, down to −10 °C / 14 °F. Close-fitting shoes and town wear.
  • LITE — intermediate, TOG 1.6, down to −20 °C / −4 °F. Town boots and walking boots.
  • ORIGINAL — this range — the warmest, TOG 2.3, down to −50 °C / −58 °F. Winter boots and extreme cold.

* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn underneath.
