All-round micro crampons for hiking and light mountaineering on slippery ground

The Nortec Nordic 2.4 micro crampons fit onto a hiking shoe or a trail running shoe in seconds. Their high-performance elastomer hugs the shape of the shoe and holds the system in place, while the steel spikes provide grip on ice, mud and slippery surfaces. The front crampons with their “flex” system limit the build-up of snow and ice, and the steel hoop at the toe of the shoe adds stability. Personal protective equipment of category II, certified to Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and to standard EN 893:2019. Three sizes, EU 35 to 48.

Grand-Froid expert's view

On an icy path at first light, it is the opening metres that bring people down. Keep the Nordic 2.4 in the outside pocket of your pack and put them on before the frozen stretch, not after the first slip. Measure the length and the girth of your shoe before ordering: shoe size alone does not determine the crampon size.

Nortec Nordic 2.4 hiking micro crampons
What is it designed for?

The Nortec Nordic 2.4 crampons are built for flat or gently inclined surfaces, where the grip of a sole is no longer enough:

  • Winter hiking: frozen paths, late snowfields, icy stretches in woodland or on valley floors
  • Trail and running: fitting onto a trail shoe remains possible, the elastomer adapting to flexible soles
  • Light mountaineering: approaches and traverses on frozen ground, excluding climbing and steep slopes
  • Commuting and getting about town: icy pavements, snow-covered paths, access to a site or a car park
  • Muddy and wet grassy ground: the steel spikes bite where a lugged sole slips
Protection and limits of use

The Nordic 2.4 crampons provide a degree of protection against the foot slipping, and improve stability and traction on icy, snowy, muddy, slippery or wet grassy surfaces. They do not remove the risk of slipping. The manufacturer sets the following limits of use:

  • Maximum incline: flat or gently inclined surfaces — [DATA TO BE CONFIRMED: the French instructions state a maximum gradient of 20%, the English version an inclination of less than 20°, which is 36%. Figure to be confirmed with Nortec before publication]
  • Excluded uses: climbing and extreme activities
  • Ground to avoid: hard, rocky or stone-covered ground, where the risk of slipping remains
  • Delicate surfaces: do not walk on parquet, wood or carpet
  • Driving: remove the crampons before driving
  • Removal: take the crampons off as soon as the ground is no longer slippery
  • Children: supervision by a responsible adult is essential
  • Before each outing: visually check for cracking, corrosion, breakage or deformation, and replace the product if any damage is visible
Technical specifications
  • All-round micro crampon: worn on a hiking shoe as well as on a trail running shoe
  • High-performance elastomer: quick fitting and secure hold on the shoe
  • Steel spikes: grip on ice, mud and slippery surfaces
  • Front “flex” system: limits the build-up of snow and ice under the crampon
  • Steel hoop: positioned at the toe of the shoe for stability
  • Spike length: over 10 mm
  • Interchangeable: no difference between the right and left crampon
  • Carry bag: supplied, spikes turned away from the body while carrying
  • Material operating range: from −30 °C / −22 °F to +40 °C / 104 °F, resistance of the plastic and metal structures

Compliance and marking
  • Category II personal protective equipment: designed and manufactured to the essential safety requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425
  • Applicable standard: EN 893:2019, crampons for mountaineering, supplemented by tests agreed between the manufacturer and the notified body
  • EU type examination: carried out under module B of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 by the notified body Certottica S.c.r.l., Longarone, Italy
  • Marking on the product: CE marking, UKCA marking, manufacturer's mark, date of manufacture in YYYYMM format, production batch, size and pictogram referring to the instructions
  • EU declaration of conformity: available to download from the manufacturer's website
  • Instructions for use: to be read before first use and kept for the whole service life of the product
Size guide

Shoe size alone does not determine the crampon size. The hold also depends on the volume of the shoe, which varies by model and brand. The correspondences below apply to standard trekking shoes; for a bulkier model, measure your shoe before choosing.

Size EU shoe size UK shoe size US shoe size Weight per pair
M 35–39 3.5–6 4–6.5 260 g (9.2 oz)
L 40–43 6.5–9 7–9.5 280 g (9.9 oz)
XL 44–48 9.5–12.5 10–13 310 g (10.9 oz)

Bulky shoe, or between two sizes? Once fitted, the back of the elastomer should sit at least 1 cm above the edge of the shoe, with no loose area and no over-tensioned part. If that is not the case, the size is not the right one. The supplied instructions include a measurement table to refine the choice.

Care & Durability
  • After use: rinse in warm water, 30 °C / 86 °F maximum, with mild soap
  • Drying: dry completely before storing
  • Storage: dry, ventilated place, 30 °C / 86 °F maximum, away from heat sources, direct sunlight and sharp objects
  • To avoid: any contact with corrosive substances, oils and lubricants
  • Service life: five years from first use, and ten years maximum from manufacture, whatever the storage conditions
  • Periodic check: at least once every twelve months from first use
  • Repairs: restricted to qualified personnel using original parts — any modification voids the warranty and compromises safety
  • End of life: dispose of the product in line with current regulations

Why choose the Nortec Nordic 2.4 crampons?

The Nordic 2.4 fit in a pack pocket and go on in seconds, which makes them usable when the need arises rather than only when planned for. Their category II PPE certification to EN 893:2019 sets them apart from non-standardised anti-slip devices, and the three sizes cover EU 35 to 48.

Three things make the difference in use: the elastomer, which takes a rigid hiking shoe as readily as a flexible trail shoe; the “flex” system at the front, which stops snow packing under the foot and neutralising the spikes; and the steel hoop at the toe, which steadies the whole thing rather than letting it turn under the sole.
