Light mountaineering crampons for ice, hard snow and frozen undergrowth

The Nortec Alp 2.0 crampons are the most complete model in the micro crampon range. Their system of varied spike lengths spreads the grip according to where the foot bears down, which makes them effective on ice, hard snow and frozen undergrowth. A velcro strap over the top of the foot works alongside the elastomer and locks the whole assembly onto the shoe, while a puller makes fitting and removal easier. The hinged front crampons limit the build-up of snow and ice, and the steel hoop at the toe provides stability. Supplied in a compact case. Personal protective equipment of category II, certified to Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and to standard EN 893:2019. Four sizes, EU 35 to 50.

Grand-Froid expert's view

This is the model to take when the ground turns uneven: hard snow, patches of ice, frozen earth. The velcro strap runs over the top of the foot and locks the crampon down, where a plain elastomer eventually shifts as the foot works. The trade-off is weight — 480 to 560 g per pair, roughly double a running model: for an outing on icy pavements, a lighter crampon will do.

Nortec Alp 2.0 light mountaineering crampons
What is it designed for?

The Alp 2.0 crampons are aimed at committing outings on frozen ground, where a hiking micro crampon reaches its limits:

  • Light mountaineering: approaches, traverses and easy routes on hard snow and ice
  • Committing winter hiking: frozen paths, hard snowfields, sections where the footing has to hold
  • Frozen undergrowth: the varied spike lengths grip on uneven ground mixing ice, frozen earth and roots
  • Long outings: the velcro strap prevents the gradual loosening that comes with hours of walking
  • Larger shoe sizes: the XXL size covers up to EU 50, where the other models stop at 48
Protection and limits of use

The Alp 2.0 crampons provide a degree of protection against the foot slipping, and improve stability and traction on icy, snowy, muddy, slippery or wet grassy surfaces. They do not remove the risk of slipping. The manufacturer sets the following limits of use:

  • Maximum incline: flat or gently inclined surfaces
  • Excluded uses: climbing and extreme activities
  • Ground to avoid: hard, rocky or stone-covered ground, where the risk of slipping remains
  • Delicate surfaces: do not walk on parquet, wood or carpet
  • Driving: remove the crampons before driving
  • Removal: take the crampons off as soon as the ground is no longer slippery
  • Children: supervision by a responsible adult is essential
  • Before each outing: visually check for cracking, corrosion, breakage or deformation, and replace the product if any damage is visible

Size guide

The sizes are calibrated for lightweight boots. The hold also depends on the volume of the shoe, which varies by model and brand.

Size EU shoe size UK shoe size US shoe size Weight per pair
M 35–39 3.5–6 4–6.5 480 g (16.9 oz)
L 40–43 6.5–9 7–9.5 500 g (17.6 oz)
XL 44–48 9.5–12.5 10–13 520 g (18.3 oz)
XXL 46–50 11–14.5 11.5–15 560 g (19.8 oz)

Checking the fit: once in place, the back of the elastomer should sit at least 1 cm above the edge of the shoe, with no loose area and no over-tensioned part. If that is not the case, the size is not the right one.

Care & Durability
  • After use: rinse in warm water, 30 °C / 86 °F maximum, with mild soap
  • Drying: dry completely before storing
  • Storage: dry, ventilated place, 30 °C / 86 °F maximum, away from heat sources, direct sunlight and sharp objects
  • To avoid: any contact with corrosive substances, oils and lubricants
  • Service life: five years from first use, and ten years maximum from manufacture, whatever the storage conditions
  • Periodic check: at least once every twelve months from first use
  • Repairs: restricted to qualified personnel using original parts — any modification voids the warranty and compromises safety
  • End of life: dispose of the product in line with current regulations

Why choose the Nortec Alp 2.0 crampons?

A micro crampon held by the elastomer alone is fine on a packed trail. As soon as the ground turns uneven and the foot starts working, it is the hold that goes first. The Alp 2.0 answers that with a velcro strap over the top of the foot, which locks the assembly down instead of relying on rubber tension alone.

The second technical choice is the system of varied spike lengths: the grip is spread according to where the foot bears down rather than being uniform, which makes the difference on frozen undergrowth mixing ice, hard earth and roots. The hinged front crampons and the steel hoop complete the set, and the XXL size covers up to EU 50.
