Protection given down to −40 °C / −40 °F*. Where most polar boots are designed for standing still, the Crossfire is aimed at sustained activity: shovelling, walking for hours, climbing. A 29.2 cm (11.5 in) leather upper reinforced with nylon inserts, speed lacing, and a rear pull loop to get them on in one movement. The base combines an Arctic™ Rubber shell, an EVA midsole and a Polar Rubber® outsole. Inside, a removable seven-layer Comfort-Fit liner that lifts out to dry. EUR sizes 39 to 48.5, three colourways.
In hard cold, the person on the move does not have the same problem as the person waiting about. An hour of shovelling, a climb through woodland, and the foot sweats — the damp settles into the insulation, which loses its power at the exact moment you stop and the body stops making heat. That effort-and-pause cycle is what the Crossfire handles, with a stack built to let vapour through rather than hold it. The rest is down to detail in use: the speed lacing and the rear pull loop can be worked with gloves on, which saves taking them off.
In activity, the enemy is no longer cold alone: it is the moisture you produce yourself. Saturated insulation loses most of its power, and the penalty arrives at the pause. The Comfort-Fit liner is built to move moisture out before it holds it: Thermaplush™ carries perspiration away from the skin, Hydromax™ moves it onwards, and the four-channel hollow fibre B-Tek™ Heat keeps volume of air while staying breathable. Diamond Net closes off the passage of air without adding bulk, and the vaporised aluminium membrane reflects the energy the foot gives off back towards it. Under the foot, the Arctic™ Rubber shell and the EVA midsole cut conduction with frozen ground. The Tundra rating places optimum comfort at high-intensity activity. One point decides the outcome: the sock must never grip, because any compression crushes the air and removes the insulation.
Because it is pitched at one use in particular: hard cold on the move. The breathability of the stack handles the moisture you make under effort, the shell and midsole cut conduction with frozen ground, and the removable liner dries every night. To that is added convenience in the field — speed lacing and a rear pull loop, two details that count when you are keeping your gloves on.
