Women's winter trousers Huppa Greta, built like an Estonian snow garment. Windproof outer fabric with a 10,000 mm waterproof and breathable membrane, taped seams, light 80 g/m² fill that stays easy on the move, inner snow gaiters, zip-adjustable leg ends, removable braces and zipped pockets. Straight cut, sizes XS to 2XL.
Huppa has dressed Estonian winters since 1997, and the Greta trousers borrow the construction of its snow garments: a windproof outer fabric with a 10,000 mm waterproof, 10,000 g/m²/24h breathable membrane, taped seams and a light 80 g/m² fill that insulates without slowing your stride. The soft lining is worn straight over long johns or tights.
Worn as a 3rd layer on the legs, over a thermal base layer once the cold sets in. Straight cut, waist adjustable in width with an elasticated back, removable adjustable braces. Sizes XS to 2XL on this reference.
Features: inner snow gaiters at the leg ends, leg width adjustable by zip to fit over the boot, built-in zipped pockets, reflective elements at the leg ends, taped seams throughout.
A Saturday in January in the Vosges, −4 °C / 25 °F, sledging run with the children: you sit in the snow, get up and go again. Pull these on over tights, zip the leg over the boot and forget the lower half of your body for the afternoon. Keep the braces on when you bend a lot: trousers that stay up let no cold air in at the back.
Legs work as you walk and produce their own heat, so trousers carry less insulation than a coat: the 80 g/m² fill traps a thin layer of air without weighing down your stride. The outer fabric blocks the wind, the membrane keeps water out and lets vapour through, and the gaiters stop snow from melting against the skin: your legs stay dry, and dry means warm. Comfort ranges from +5 °C / 41 °F to −10 °C / 14 °F. Below that, or when standing still, wear thermal long johns underneath. The trousers insulate the legs: feet need their own protection.
Because they deal with both ways water gets into trousers: through the fabric, with a membrane and taped seams, and through the leg ends, with gaiters and adjustable width. The light fill does the rest without turning a walk into an effort.
The three-layer system:
On the legs, it is snow melting inside the boot that chills you, long before the fabric of the trousers does.
* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn underneath.
