Women's waterproof thermal jacket: synthetic insulation paired with a sealed membrane.
The Stormtech Nostromo X-2W women's jacket combines Thermolex™ synthetic down insulation with a waterproof, breathable H2XTREME® 15,000 mm membrane. Fitted with an adjustable hood, a waterproof zip and articulated elbows, it protects down to −10 °C / 14 °F*, from XS to 3XL.
The Stormtech Nostromo X-2W women's thermal jacket brings together two functions rarely found in the same garment: Thermolex™ insulation, a high loft synthetic down developed by the brand, and an H2XTREME® 15,000 mm / 10,000 g/m² outer shell that is waterproof, windproof and breathable. Fully sealed seams, a waterproof centre-front zip, an adjustable full-coverage hood and articulated elbows. A 120 g/m² (3.57 oz/yd²) mechanical-stretch outer fabric and a nylon taffeta lining keep it light. Rated down to −10 °C / 14 °F*, in sizes XS to 3XL.
For a February break in New York or a mid-season week in Quebec, pack one jacket instead of a down jacket and a raincoat. Wear it over a light fleece as soon as the wind picks up, a thicker jumper once it freezes. The internal chest pocket keeps your phone warm — a battery left in the cold loses its charge in minutes.
Thermolex™ insulation is a high loft synthetic down: its lofted fibres hold a still volume of air against the body, and that volume is what produces the warmth you feel. Two things normally destroy it — a gust passing straight through, and moisture flattening the fibres. The H2XTREME® membrane and its 15,000 mm waterproof rating, together with the fully sealed seams and the waterproof centre-front zip, keep water and wind on the outside. In the other direction, 10,000 g/m²/24h lets the vapour produced by effort escape, which keeps the insulation dry and therefore effective. The whole covers the range +5 °C / 41 °F to −10 °C / 14 °F*. To go below that, add a fleece mid layer underneath rather than a heavier outer shell. One advantage specific to this insulation: it holds its properties where wet natural down loses them.
A down jacket keeps you warm until the first downpour; a rain jacket keeps water out without adding warmth. The Nostromo X-2W does both in a single garment, by placing Thermolex™ insulation behind a shell rated at 15,000 mm. Its 120 g/m² outer fabric and taffeta lining keep it light enough to wear all day, and the adjustable hem, full-coverage hood and articulated elbows make it a jacket for moving in rather than one for standing about.
