A fleece built like a coat: the outer knit has a marl finish and the inner face is a sherpa fleece, holding on to the air your body has warmed instead of letting it go.
The stand-up collar and the lined hood with its drawcord close in around the face, the YKK® zip with chin guard and inner storm flap shuts out draughts, and five storage pockets sit on a straight cut.
The trap with a fleece this thick is wearing it against bare skin: always keep a technical base layer underneath, or the damp stays on the skin and the warmth counts for nothing. Open the zip two thirds of the way rather than taking it off for a five-minute stop indoors — it takes a while to come back up to temperature.
−20 °C / −4 °F is the lower limit given for this fleece worn on its own, in dry weather, with no wind and the hood up. Moving air changes the arithmetic entirely: as soon as there is wind, put a windproof layer over the top, and it is that layer which then sets the working temperature of the whole outfit.
Because it answers the cold you simply have to take, standing still: it carries the highest fabric weight in our fleece range, and that reserve of thickness does nothing during effort but becomes decisive at a standstill. Wear it over a thermal base layer, and under a parka as soon as the wind gets up.
The three-layer system:
* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn underneath.
