At Huppa, the Estonian winter sets the specification: five months of frost, Baltic wind and days that end at three in the afternoon. The Alaska parka answers with a natural filling of 80% feathers and 20% down, a heat-reflective HuppaTec lining that sends part of the emitted heat back towards the body, and an outer fabric in recycled polyester with a 5,000 mm waterproof and 5,000 g/m²/24h breathable membrane.
It is worn as a 3rd layer over a base layer and a fleece. Straight unisex cut, hip-covering length, hood with faux-fur trim, ribbed cuffs. Sizes S to 3XL on this reference.
Features: two-way zip under a press-stud storm flap, removable elastic straps to wear the parka open over your shoulders when moving from the cold into a heated interior, reflective elements on the fabric.
Rovaniemi, early February, −27 °C / −17 °F on the station thermometer. You walk twenty minutes to the hotel with a suitcase, and that is when you understand what a lining that sends heat back does: your back stays warm under the bag. Remember to close the storm flap over the zip before going out: that is where the wind looks for a way in. The filling makes the warmth, the membrane keeps it dry.
The filling traps air in thousands of tiny chambers: the feathers (80%) give it its hold and rebound, the down (20%) provides the highest insulation for its weight. The HuppaTec lining adds something wadding does not have: a scatter of metallised dots sends part of the radiated heat back towards the body, with no extra thickness. You keep a coat thinner than its warmth would suggest. The filling loses its loft if it gets wet: the 5,000 mm membrane and the flap over the zip are there to keep it dry. The comfort range runs from −5 °C / 23 °F to −30 °C / −22 °F. The garment insulates the torso: hands, head and feet need their own protection.
Because it stacks three complementary protections: the natural filling traps air, the HuppaTec lining sends radiated heat back, the membrane keeps it all dry. And because it was designed by people who live the winter it is made for.
The three-layer system:
The body produces the heat; the lining reflects part of it back.
* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn underneath.
