Huppa builds its winter trousers for Estonia, where wet snow lasts from November to March. The Scott 2 brings that construction to men: a windproof outer fabric with a 10,000 mm waterproof, 10,000 g/m²/24h breathable membrane, taped seams and a 100% recycled polyester fill of 80 g/m² that insulates without slowing your stride. The taffeta lining slides over jeans or long johns.
Worn as a 3rd layer on the legs, alone over a base layer or on top of everyday trousers. Straight cut, waist adjustable in width with an elasticated back, removable adjustable braces. Sizes M to 2XL on this reference.
Features: inner snow gaiters at the leg ends, leg width adjustable by zip to fit over the boot, built-in zipped pockets, reflective elements at the leg ends.
A Sunday in January, −3 °C / 27 °F, light rain turning to snow before the end of the day. A walk or an outing in the snow, same trousers: pull them on over your jeans before leaving, leg zip over the boot, and two hours of walking without feeling your thighs go cold. Stow the braces in the pocket if you're not bending much: the elasticated back waist is enough to keep them in place.
Legs work as you walk and produce their own heat, so trousers carry less insulation than a coat: the 80 g/m² fill traps a thin layer of air without weighing down your stride. The outer fabric blocks the wind, the membrane keeps water out and lets vapour through, and the gaiters stop snow from melting against the skin: your legs stay dry, and dry means warm. The comfort range runs from +5 °C / 41 °F to −10 °C / 14 °F. Below that, or when standing still, wear thermal long johns underneath. The trousers insulate the legs: feet need their own protection.
Because they deal with both ways water gets into trousers: through the fabric, with a membrane and taped seams, then through the leg ends, with gaiters and adjustable width. The light fill does the rest without turning a walk into an effort.
The three-layer system:
Wet jeans chill the thighs in ten minutes; a pair of membrane trousers over them changes the day, not just the time you head home.
* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn underneath.
