The Dan thermal balaclava (CXS) is designed to provide complete insulation for the head, neck, and ears in freezing work environments.
Knitted in a 100% acrylic ribbed knit, it is highly stretchable to fit all head shapes and slips perfectly under a construction hard hat without creating bulky layers. Its single eye opening protects the entire face from biting winds.
The essential accessory to seal off cold air draughts at the collar during outdoor construction or cold room work.
In extreme cold, you can layer up on the torso and legs. The face, however, often remains bare. Yet it is the area that dictates comfort: at −20 °C with a slight breeze, it is freezing cheeks, nose, and ears that will force you to stop, not a cold body. The Dan balaclava is knitted in a 100% acrylic ribbed knit. This alternating knitting technique gives it exceptional elasticity: it stretches to slip on easily, then grips firmly against the skull and jawline without leaving loose areas or creating pressure points. It is this snug profile that allows it to be worn safely under a construction hard hat without added bulk. With its single facial opening for the eyes, it extends low enough to seal the air entry under your jacket collar.
The head is the area of fastest thermal loss due to the scalp being highly vascularised and naturally poorly insulated. If this area remains exposed to freezing temperatures, the body will cut off blood circulation to the extremities (hands, feet) to keep the brain warm. A ribbed knit insulates via the tiny air pockets between the stitches, trapping warm air all around the skull, while its ribbed structure allows it to regain its shape without ever leaving a gap at the neck. Reminder: a knit is not a windproof membrane. Under very strong winds, it is advisable to wear it under a hood or helmet, which will act as the barrier.
The classic winter mistake consists of wearing a very warm jacket, a simple beanie, and leaving your neck totally exposed.
* Indicative temperature. Perceived cold varies depending on activity, morphology, humidity, wind, and the base layers worn.
