Legs are the most neglected part of winter kit: three layers on the upper body, a single pair of trousers below. The SeamFlex long johns are knitted seamless, with no inside leg seam — the one that rubs with every step.
Its polypropylene-based fabric moves moisture out to the surface of the knit and dries fast. The stretch knit follows the bend of the knee without pulling at the ankle. Double sizing from XS-S to 3XL-4XL.
Base layer down to −10 °C / 14 °F, to be worn under trousers.
The legs are the most overlooked part of winter kit: people build up three layers on the upper body and keep a single pair of trousers below. The SeamFlex long johns are knitted seamlessly, which removes the inside leg seam — the one that rubs with every step and ends up irritating the skin. The fabric uses polypropylene-based fibres, light and quick drying, which move moisture out to the face of the knit. The stretch knit follows the bend of the knee without pulling at the ankle.
Packing for a cold-weather trip, this is the item people leave out and then wish they had. It takes up less room than a pair of socks and completely changes how a day outdoors feels. The seamless build avoids chafing on the inner thigh over a long walk. Take two: wash one in the evening and it dries overnight.
The thighs carry a large muscle mass and a considerable area of skin, which makes them a major source of heat loss the moment they stop working. A thin knit against the skin creates a still layer of air that the trousers hold in place, and it is those few millimetres that separate a cold leg from a comfortable one. Polypropylene-based fibres take up very little water, which avoids damp fabric against the skin after a climb or a brisk walk. Long johns do not stop the wind.
Because the legs are the most overlooked part of winter kit, and because the seamless build removes the inside leg seam, the one that rubs with every step.
The three-layer system:
Three layers go on the upper body and one on the legs: that is usually where the cold gets in.
* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn over the top.
