The Reward long johns are a base layer worn against the skin, under work trousers or jeans. The brushed inner face raises a nap that holds warm air along the thighs, the flat seams leave no rubbing points down the leg, and the soft elasticated waistband adapts without pressing. Sizes M to 3XL.
The Reward long johns use the same brushed inner face as the base layer top of the same name: the fibres raised on the skin side form a nap that holds air and gives an immediate sense of warmth across the thighs. The surface carries the ULTRA LAVA treatment, which limits the odours linked to perspiration; its effect fades gradually with washing. Two points of construction matter especially on a garment worn under work trousers: the flat seams, which create no rubbing points down the leg, and the soft elasticated waistband, which follows your shape without pressing on the abdomen.
You wear long johns from November to March without thinking about them. What counts on a base layer worn twelve hours a day is the waistband: a waist that marks the skin becomes unbearable well before the end of the day. The brushed face gives immediate warmth to the thighs, the area people most often forget to insulate. Choose it close to the leg — if it hangs loose it will hold neither the warm air nor the moisture.
Brushing raises the fibres on the inner face of the knit, which multiplies the pockets of air in contact with the skin. On the legs, that gain is felt most when you stand still: the thighs are a large surface and stop producing heat the moment you stop walking. The soft elasticated waistband does more than provide comfort — a band that compresses reduces blood flow, and reduced blood flow cools the extremities. A reminder: like any thermal base layer, it stops neither wind nor water, and always works under a pair of trousers.
The most costly winter mistake is to pull work trousers or jeans over an ordinary cotton base layer.
* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the trousers worn over the top.
