SUMMARY

The Trenton trousers go over a next-to-skin base layer, a fleece under-trouser when the cold sets in, or simply a pair of soft jeans. The 310 g/m² stretch softshell is fleece-lined and its TPU membrane keeps the wind out. Detachable braces hold them in place when you crouch down, the waist adjusts, and zipped thigh vents release heat while you are on the move.

Fleece-lined softshell All day outside, no need to change

A fleece-lined stretch softshell, for whole days spent outdoors

The Trenton trousers go over a next-to-skin base layer, over a fleece under-trouser when the cold sets in, or simply over stretch jeans, cords or any soft pair of trousers on an ordinary day. The 310 g/m² softshell contains 6% elastane, so it stretches as you crouch down, step over an obstacle or walk uphill. Its TPU membrane keeps the wind out and lets water vapour escape at 5000 g/m²/24h, while the fabric resists water up to 5000 mm outside the seams. Inside, a fleece lining holds on to the warmth your legs produce. The detachable braces adjust for length, the waist adjusts, and the bottom of each leg combines an opening zip with an inner snow gaiter. Added to that are zipped thigh vents, two zipped front pockets and one zipped back pocket, and reflective details.

Grand-Froid expert's view

On a cold-weather trip, a typical day runs through very different things: dog sledding or a snowmobile in the morning, snowshoeing or a walk in the forest in the afternoon, then waiting for the northern lights in the evening, sitting in the snow for an hour or two. A lot of movement, then none at all. What you want is a pair of trousers that vents while you are active and holds the warmth once you stop, so you never have to change between activities. This is the pair you pull on in the morning in Finland or Quebec and keep on until the evening.

Men's fleece-lined softshell trousers with detachable braces Trenton CXS, black
What is it designed for?

These trousers cover a whole day of a cold-weather trip, from an active morning to a still evening, and work just as well day to day through the winter.

  • Trips to the far north: dog sledding, snowmobiling, watching the northern lights, ice fishing
  • Deep snow: snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, walking off the trail where every step sinks in
  • Standing still outdoors: waiting, night photography, wildlife watching, the stands
  • Days at the resort: sledging with the children, queuing for the lifts, sitting out on a terrace
  • Everyday winter: clearing snow from the drive, bringing in firewood, walking or cycling

Thermal protection

Winter trousers do not produce heat: they hold on to the warmth your legs make and stop the wind carrying it away. The fleece lining holds a layer of air between the fabric and the leg, and it is that still air that insulates, more than the thickness of the fabric itself. The TPU membrane keeps out the wind, which empties a pair of trousers of its warmth within minutes, while letting the water vapour you produce during effort escape.

The rest is yours to adjust, and these trousers give you three ways to do it. The thigh zips open on the climb and close again the moment you stop. The 5000 g/m²/24h breathability moves vapour out continuously, with nothing to think about. The waist and the braces loosen to let air travel down the leg. Enough to match the trousers to your level of effort as the day goes on, without ever taking them off.

On the outside, the fabric resists water outside the seams, enough to see you through a shower or a snowfall on the way, and the inner snow gaiter closes the bottom of the leg when you walk through deep snow or sit down in it.

Size guide

Take your usual size, and the size above if you plan to wear them over a fleece under-trouser or a pair of jeans: the layer of air this leaves insulates further, and the waist tightens up afterwards. The measurements below are those of the trousers laid flat, not body measurements.

3 - Hips, flat (cm) 50 52 54 56 58 60 62 64 66

Measurements in cm, taken flat. Manufacturing tolerance ± 5%.

The total length is the same across the whole range, at 109 cm: from one size to the next, it is the waist and the hips that grow, by 2 cm each time.

Care & Durability
  • Machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F maximum, on a delicate cycle, inside out
  • Close the zips and detach the braces before washing
  • Wash without fabric softener: it settles on the membrane and slows the passage of water vapour
  • No tumble drying: the heat tires the elastane and the trousers lose their hold
  • Do not iron, do not dry clean
  • Dry in open air, flat or on a hanger
  • Store them dry and uncompressed, so the fleece lining keeps its loft from one season to the next

Why choose the Trenton softshell trousers?

Because they last the whole day without you having to pack a second pair. The softshell keeps out the wind, the fleece lining holds the warmth of your legs, and the elastane lets you crouch, step over and sit down without feeling held in. If you are heading somewhere cold for a few days, this is the piece of lower-body kit worth sizing generously: it is the one that decides what time you go back inside.

The three-layer system, applied to the legs:

  • 1st layer — base: thermal long johns or tights, next to the skin. It holds on to body heat and moves perspiration away.
  • 2nd layer — mid layer: a fleece under-trouser when the cold sets in, or simply stretch jeans, cords or any soft pair of trousers on an ordinary day.
  • 3rd layer — outer (role of this product): it keeps out wind and snow, and holds on to the warmth the first two have produced.

On the legs, the cold rarely comes from the air: it comes from what you touch, the snow you sit down in, the ground, the frozen seat.

* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn underneath.
