The SeamFlex top is a long-sleeved base layer, knitted seamlessly: no ridge across the shoulders under a rucksack strap, none at the sides under a belt. Its 66% polypropylene, 30% polyamide, 4% elastane knit at 220 g/m² moves moisture outwards and dries fast. Doubled sizes, from XS/S to 3XL/4XL.
A base layer is judged on whether you can feel it at all. The SeamFlex is knitted in one piece, seamlessly: there is no ridge across the shoulders under a rucksack strap, none at the sides under a belt, and the flat seams of the make-up do not irritate the skin. The knit combines 66% polypropylene, which takes up almost no water and moves moisture out to the face of the fabric, 30% polyamide, which gives it tensile strength and shape retention, and 4% elastane for stretch. Long sleeves, a close fit that follows the movement.
When you spend the winter outdoors, the base layer matters more than the parka. The seamless build shows itself around the eighth hour, when an ordinary top starts to mark the shoulders. Polypropylene dries fast, which counts after any effort. Buy it close-fitting: a base layer that hangs loose carries nothing away.
A base layer does not warm you: it stops moisture from cooling you. Polypropylene takes up very little water, which forces perspiration out to the face of the knit instead of holding it against the skin. That is what avoids wet fabric at the moment you stop — the exact moment your body stops producing heat. At the same time, a knit worn close to the body creates a still layer of air that the next layers hold in place. A base layer stops neither wind nor water, and always works under a 2nd layer.
Because a base layer proves itself by going unnoticed, and the seamless build removes the two places where an ordinary top ends up bothering you: the shoulder under a strap, the side under a belt.
The three-layer system:
The base layer decides how comfortable the other two feel: if it holds on to moisture, nothing you put over it will make up for that.
* Indicative temperature. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn over the top.
