The brushed inner face insulates the moment you put it on, and the flat seams do not mark the skin

The Reward is a long sleeve crew neck base layer, built for cold environments where the body stays largely still. Its fabric is brushed on the inside: the fibres are mechanically raised on the skin side to create a nap. That nap traps warm air and gives a sense of insulation straight away, before the body has had to work for it. The surface carries the ULTRA LAVA treatment, which limits odours linked to sweating — its effectiveness fades gradually with washing. The seams are flat, which avoids irritation over long wear.

This is the top for days when you take the cold without being able to move your way out of it: forklift work, static posts, cold-store shifts. The brushed inside is felt straight away, where a smooth base layer needs you to move before it warms up. Keep it for jobs with little movement, because it runs hot.

What is it designed for?

A brushed fabric is aimed at cold you endure: the situations where you spend hours in a freezing environment without the effort that would warm you up.

  • Unheated premises: warehouses, sheds, open workshops, where the temperature stays low all day
  • Cold stores: the inner nap gives an immediate thermal barrier on the move from warm to cold
  • Waiting and watching: static posts, markets, fishing and shooting from a hide
  • Cold nights and camping: it works for sleeping under canvas or in an unheated room, holding the body's residual warmth
  • Under a fleece or a padded jacket: it brings warmth without noticeable thickness

Thermal protection

Brushing is a mechanical process that raises the fibres on the inner face of the knit. That nap multiplies the micro-spaces in direct contact with the skin, and it is those spaces that hold the air. Weight for weight, a brushed top insulates markedly more than a smooth knit. The sense of warmth is also immediate, because the nap limits direct contact between skin and cold fibre. Flat seams remove the ridges that, under a jacket or a bag strap, turn into pressure points over the hours. The trade-off for that warmth is managing effort: a brushed top holds more moisture than a thin knit, and suits jobs with little movement.

The cotton trap:

  • The sponge effect: cotton soaks up the sweat the body produces, but cannot move it out.
  • The chill at the break: that stored sweat loses its temperature the moment you stop. No coat, however thick, warms wet skin.
  • The rule: replace the cotton tee with a thermal top worn against the skin. It moves moisture out while insulating from the moment you put it on.

A brushed fabric warms fast, but is chosen for the activity rather than for the temperature alone.
