The Chester is a reversible winter jacket: one high-visibility side certified to EN ISO 20471 class 3, one navy side to wear off duty. The 140 g/m² padding, the hood and the zipped pockets are the same whichever way round you wear it. Sizes S to 3XL.
The Chester answers the days that happen in two places. One side carries the high visibility, in fluorescent yellow or orange depending on the model, with its segmented reflective tapes, which follow your movement better than a continuous band. The other is a padded navy side, with discreet contrast trims and reflective details. Turn the jacket inside out and you change register without changing garment. The 140 g/m² padding is the same whichever side you wear outermost, as are the hood, the elasticated cuffs and hem and the zipped pockets found on both sides.
A lot of people carry two jackets through the winter: the one for work and the one for everything else. This does both, and that is one less thing taking up room in the cab or by the front door. Turning it round takes a minute, once the pockets are empty.
The 140 g/m² padding fills the space between the two faces. Its fibres hold a layer of air, and it is that still air that insulates. The hood, the elasticated cuffs and the elasticated hem close the openings through which that warm air would escape. This is a jacket built for moderate to sustained physical activity: on a completely static post, a thicker mid layer underneath comes into its own.
The temperature figure is a Grand-Froid usage guide, carried by the asterisk and the footnote. It is separate from the certifications, which cover visibility and behaviour in the cold, not a value in degrees.
The jacket is certified to EN ISO 20471 class 3, the highest level of the standard, the one for work on live carriageways. That conformity applies only when the high-visibility side is worn outermost: the manufacturer states this itself. Turned onto its navy side, the jacket keeps its warmth, its pockets and its reflective details, and becomes an ordinary winter jacket, to be worn away from areas where a signalling garment is required.
High-visibility conformity is guaranteed for 25 wash cycles. Beyond that the jacket still keeps you warm, but its level of signalling is no longer covered by the certification. On the cold side, the jacket is certified to EN 14058 with class 3 thermal resistance, class 2 air permeability and a measured insulation of 0.201 m²·K/W. The X in the marking means resistance to water penetration was not assessed.
Because it does away with the second jacket. One garment covers the area where signalling is required and the whole rest of the day, with the same warmth on either side.
What you wear underneath changes everything:
* Indicative temperature for moderate to sustained activity. Perceived warmth varies with activity, body type, humidity, wind and the layers worn underneath.
